All funds raised will go towards local Special Olympic athletes.

Special Olympics B.C. dedicates its time to providing individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to gain valuable benefits such as friendships and life skills, along with athletic achievements. In Fort St. John, it provides year-round sport training and competitive opportunities in five different sports for over 50 athletes, along with the help of over 60 volunteers.

Recently, Fort St. John’s Sheryl Jakubowski competed in the snowshoe racing event at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where she won a gold medal in the 4×100 relay, and a bronze medal in the 1600 metre individual event. Another local athlete, Darlene Jakubowski, also competed in South Korea, where she took home silver and gold in figure skating, replicating her on-ice performance at the 2009 event in Boise, Idaho.

The Loonie Mile fundraiser will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Pomeroy Sport Centre.
