Peace Region curlers competing with top names in the sport

Dawson Creek’s Jordan Steinke, along with Sexsmith’s Kurt Balderston and Daylan Vavrek, will hit the ice with big time names in the competitive world of curling, including Calgary’s Kevin Koe, Kevin Martin of Edmonton and Brad Gushue from St. John’s.

The Showdown is also attracting international competition, as teams from Sweden, China and Switzerland are also participating in the action.

Talent will be at a premium at the upcoming Showdown, as the ladies event will feature nine of the top ten Canadian women’s teams, including Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones, Heather Nedohin of Sherwood Park, Alberta and Grande Prairie’s Renne Sonnenberg.

Meanwhile on the Men’s side of the competition, five of the top ten Canadian men’s teams will hit the ice with the three Peace Region teams.

Sexsmith’s Kurt Balderston is a 20 time men’s provincial participant and three time Pomeroy Inn & Suites Peace Curling Tour Champion, while Daylan Vavrek, also from Sexsmith, placed third in the 2013 Junior Men’s Provincials.

Jordan Steinke, representing the Dawson Creek Curling Club, enters the Showdown as the 2013 Peace Curling Tour Champion, and the 2012 Junior Men’s Provincial runner-up.

Competition begins Thursday, March 14 at 5 p.m. with the finals set to be played Sunday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m.
