Senior Flyers lose 5-3 in Grande Prairie

The game’s first period was a significant one in the victory for Grande Prairie, as the home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

A familiar face to the Flyers got the offence rolling Thursday evening, as the game’s first goal came off the stick of former Fort St. John Senior Flyer Donny Lloyd.

Following a scoreless second, both teams found their offensive touch in the third. The scoring began with David Alexander scoring short-handed just 17 seconds into the final frame, with the lone assist going to Fort St. John Husky Robbie Sidhu.

With the Flyers now trailing 2-1, the Athletics extended their lead, scoring two consecutive goals two minutes apart.

Fort St. John answered with that very same amount of offence, as Ryan Carter scored twice, roughly five minutes apart at the 15 minute and 10 minute marker of the third.

Trailing only by a goal, Fort St. John was unable to score the game-tying goal, as Grande Prairie added one final tally on the power-play with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Senior Flyers will have to forget about this loss quickly and shift their focus to a herd of Mustangs heading to Fort St. John, as the Flyers and the Hythe Mustangs square off Saturday at the North Peace Arena.

Saturday’s game is a special one for the Fort St. John community, as it the annual Teddy Bear Toss, where fans litter the ice with stuffed animals following the Flyers’ first goal of the game. All those toys will be donated to the local Salvation Army, and will be distributed to children in need this holiday season.

Organizers are asking that if you are attending the game and wish to toss a teddy, please wrap it in a plastic bag first to prevent any damage to the toy.

Saturday’s game begins at 8:30 p.m. at the North Peace Arena.
