Sawchuk took home the “Educator” award for his work as an environmentalist in the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area. The award goes to those who share northern B.C.’s culture, history and experience with travellers. Every spring Sawchuk and his string of pack horses take visitors on expeditions into the wild of the M-KMA.

Brown was the recipient of the Walter Smith Visionary Award, for his “tireless” work to preserve the history of Fort Nelson. By collecting artifacts and fundraising, he was able to create the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum, where he remains a curator. Part of that fundraising included a “beard auction” in 1982, when he raised over $10,000 for the right to shave his trademark beard.

The awards were part of Northern B.C. Tourism’s annual education and networking conference.
