Wooden boat race showing support for Peace River

The event will begin at Bear Flat, located on the Hudson’s Hope Highway – Hwy 29. Those attending should look to the left and will see a large red kayak-shaped sign reading "Paddle for the Peace". Upon seeing the sign enter the hayfield and follow the road to the edge of the river.

Interested participants can purchase a wooden boat for $20 from the Peace Valley Association through a variety of ways. Purchases can be made online through the PVEA’s official website’s donate link.

Boats can also be purchased by contacting Tony Atkins at 250-785-2088, or by visiting the organization's table at the Fort St. John Farmers Market on Saturday, September 22 and 29 at the North Peace Arena.

All racing boats will be launched at 11:30 a.m. upriver from the hayfield at Bear Flat, and spectators will be able to watch as the boats make their way downriver.

The event will include prizes for first, second and third place, with first receiving an outdoor family portrait session, while second and third win a box of assorted local food produced in the Peace Region.

Following the race, participants and spectators will take place in a bring-your-own picnic lunch in the hayfields.

Event organizers say the event is in support of the Peace River as it faces a "serious threat " with the proposal of the Site C dam.
