This holiday season, all of our Supporters are entered to win an $800 Shopping Spree Giveaway!

That includes approximately $3,000 raised by the Doggy Day Spa in July.

“Our goal was $12,500, so we really exceeded it,” says Rosolynn Kalb, branch manager. “We have to raise funds to operate, and so this will help us a lot.”

In addition to the funds raised by the Paws for a Cause event, as of Saturday, over $16,000 has also been through the community challenge against the South Peace SPCA. Add in an additional $6,000 from Fort Nelson’s Paws for a Cause day – which also goes to the North Peace SPCA – and there’s plenty to be smiling about. Last year’s event raised over $10,000 and the year before over $15,000, but Kalb attributes the success of 2012 to all the extras added in.

“It varies, it depends on if it’s raining or not, or if the stars are aligned in the heavens, so they must have been really aligned well this year,” she says. “We’ve not had the vendors, and we’ve not had the face painting and the balloons, so all of that I think added to having people come, and the weather cooperated too.”

All of the money raised will go towards operating costs, which include wages, building maintenance, medical supplies and services for the animals. Kalb says veterinary bills can sometimes be as high as $5,000 a month to spay and neuter all of the animals, and that a lot of work needs to be done to the building.

“It’s a building that requires constant maintenance, and this year we’ve had to pay for an air exchange system, which was in the vicinity of $10,000,” she explains. “Obviously it costs money to operate the shelter, and we are not funded by government in the sense that we get any directly from the government for operating our animal shelter.”

Final amounts raised, and the final results of the community challenge are being tallied, as the last pledges come in.
