The week celebration was created by the B.C. Association of Farmers Markets and was officially launched in 2010.
Fort St. John isn’t going to shy away from celebrating this cause, as Saturday, July 28, the Energetic City’s Farmers Market is hosting its popular Harvest Festival, which will be held at the North Peace Arena Lobby, alongside the weekly Farmers Market.
In honour of the celebration, Fort St. John Mayor Lori Ackerman will be in attendance to open the event at 9 a.m. by officially proclaiming the Saturday as Farmers Market Day in the city.
In celebrating locally grown and produced products, the Market will be holding a pancake breakfast, with the syrupy circles containing only local ingredients, such as organic flour, Saskatoon syrup and local honey.
Along with tasty food, the festival will also include performances from local musicians, serenading shoppers from an outdoor stage.
The Northern Environmental Action Team will also be in attendance, demonstrating pickling and jam making techniques.
Karen Mason-Bennett of NEAT, says our relationship with food is crucial to our well being.
“What’s old is new again…The closer a relationship we have with the food we eat, the healthier we will be.”
In B.C., farmers only consist of 1.6 per cent of the population.
However, such a small percentage produces an estimated 48 per cent of all foods consumed within the province.
Elizabeth Quinn, Manager of the BCAFM, is asking people to come out and enjoy all the great, locally grown food.
“This is a call to action to British Columbians. We’re asking people to come out to their local farmers market, enjoy the festivities, the fresh grown and prepared foods and thank B.C. farmers for bringing us healthy, quality, fresh food.”
The event will run during regular Fort St. John Farmers Market hours, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
