The public had two choices, between the second and third Monday of the month.
B.C. will be the only province with a holiday on that day, as Family Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Manitoba and Prince Edward Island also have the third Monday off, for Louis Riel Day and Islander Day respectively. The third Monday also coincides with President’s Day in the United States.
Over 31,000 selections were made on a poll on the Family Day website, with over 18,000 for the second Monday, over 9,000 for the third and 3,500 with no preference.
Premier Christy Clark promised a Family Day holiday in her throne speech in October, giving employers 2 years to adjust.
“Having our own unique day in B.C. creates distinctive opportunities for families and local businesses,” she said today. “British Columbians will be able to enjoy all kinds of local attractions with fewer lineups and less out-of-town traffic.”
