They earned their spot after winning top honours at the Regional Science Fair in Fort St. John in April.

Gulevich, who is attending the competition for her fourth time since 2008, spoke with Moose FM/energeticcity-beta.mystagingwebsite.com before leaving for the trip, and said she is excited to return for the “great experience”.

“It’s always nice to see returning students,” she said, “as well as meet all the different students from across Canada and learn about their projects.”

Today is an important day for the young scientists, as they will show their project to 5 – 6 judges in just one day, taking up to 30 minutes including a question period. Gulevich says that even with her experience, it’s still nerve-racking having to present her project, “Why Are You Looking So Green?”.

“I like it when the judges ask questions that I haven’t thought of before,” she says. “Sometimes they have a completely different take.”

However, it’s not all about the science; tomorrow the students will also get to tour the host province. Gulevich recommends that first timers at the competition embrace the experience, meet lots of people and share their passion for science.

The Canada-wide Science Fair continues until Saturday, with the Awards Ceremony Thursday evening.
