Locally, the week will kick off with the Hike for Hospice fundraiser, held this year at the Pomeroy Sport Centre walking track in case of bad weather May 6. Between 12 and 4 p.m. Sunday, individuals, families and team are taking pledges to walk and raise money which has been used in the past for training and educational materials and workshops, supplies for the Palliative Care kitchen and furnishing the two Palliative Care rooms at the Old Hospital.
There will also be an informative display at the library throughout the week.
Volunteers at the Palliative Care Centre in Fort St. John provide companionship to people with terminal illnesses at home or in the hospital, and support for those living in poor health. They provide a break for family members sitting by their side, all for free. The Palliative Care office also has a library full of information on stress, caregiving, loss, dying, death and grief.
The Society has been in the city for 15 years, helped 20 clients last year, and put in almost 1,000 volunteer hours.
