NEAT’s Green Change project hopes to increase food security in the Peace Region, by growing fresh vegetables year round in insulated shipping containers. Those containers would have LED growing lights and a hydroponics system powered by alternative energy. The intention is to place these containers side-by-side on brownfield lots, so the produce would be available directly to residents.
“The Green Freight project will incorporate aspects of a community supported agriculture model and will encourage residents and businesses alike to become involved in the production of their food,” according to a press release from NEAT. “The Green Freight location is intended to become an agriculture hub within Fort St John, providing edible landscaping workshops, school tours and agricultural information and advice.”
To vote for NEAT’s project, fans can visit www.fuellingchange.com starting May 4 to vote online. People can vote multiple times by redeeming codes on their receipts after making a purchase at a Shell location.
