Legally, drivers must slow to 70 km/h if the prescribed speed limit is 80 km/h or over, or to 40 km/h if less. They must also move into another lane, even an oncoming lane, if it is safe to do so.

If a driver fails to follow either of these rules, they could be fined $173 and three penalty points on their driver’s licence.
