Initial reports indicate they’ve found that hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, can trigger earthquakes. This is the procedure which blasts sand, water and chemicals through wells into the earth in order to break apart rocks and release oil and gas. It’s used widely in Alberta and also increasingly here in Northeast B.C.
The U.S. Geological Survey is set to release its findings Wednesday, which will show that the increase of earthquakes in the U.S. midcontinent since 2001 is “almost certainly” the result of oil and gas production.
