Kirby Dreher discusses LPGA season opener

SA: Have you ever played this course before, other than practice rounds?

KD: Yes, this will be my third time playing this tournament, and we also had a few rounds of the Futures Tour Q School here a few years ago. I know the course very well and have probably played it 20th times or so.

SA: Do you feel that experience is beneficial for this weekend?

KD: I do feel it’s beneficial to me. I have my yardage book from the first time I played here competitively and it’s nice to see what clubs I have hit on par 3’s in previous years, and also the wind direction and where previous year’s hole locations have been.

SA: Was there anything specific you focused on in training for this event?

KD: I have worked really hard on my short game in the past month and feel that if I can make a few more putts than normal I should fare pretty well. With some solid ball striking and a great short game I think I have a chance to win this tournament!

SA: I checked the weather for the weekend and it looks like there could be some rainy conditions. If it does rain does that affect the way you approach the weekend?

KD: Not really, the only thing you really have to adjust to is less roll on your tee shots and softer greens. I don’t think that should be a problem, plus everyone else has to play in it too so it shouldn’t change too much. We had rain so much last year that I think I am pretty well adjusted to the changing weather conditions.

Following the first day of play, Dreher sits tied for 120th, shooting a five-over 77. She finished her first round with seven pars, eight bogeys and three birdies.

Entering day two, she sits 10 strokes behind first place America Seul-Ki Park, who opened her tournament with a five-under, 67.
