Local female hockey player playing for CWHL championship

The tournament, taking place in Niagra Falls, Ontario, is similar in format to the NHL playoffs, as this is the post season for the Women’s National Hockey League.

The tournament features the best talent female hockey has to offer, as Unruh will be competing with and against some top names in female hockey, including players from both the Canadian and United States’ National Women’s teams. Some of those players include Jayna Hefford, Meghan Agosta, and Gillian Apps.

Apps and Hefford, along with numerous other team Canada members, all don the same jersey as Unruh, who plays for Brampton HC.

Unruh and her fellow Brampton HC teammates have already played a game in the tournament, defeating the Boston Blades 3-2 Thursday, March 22. Unruh even contributed to the score sheet, registering an assist on the team’s second goal of the game, scored by Ashley Riggs.

Unruh is no stranger to high level hockey. She was captain for Team British Columbia at Under-18 National Championships in 2005, and played for Team Canada at the Winter Universiade, winning gold in 2009 and 2011. She was also the Captain of the York Lions for the 2010-2011 season.

Anyone interested in watching Unruh or any other teams can do so by streaming the tournament live online. If interested in watching any of the games, visit the CWHL’s official website.
