That also represents a 1,500 per cent increase over the 2001 figure of $29 million. It’s estimated the total amount of mineral sales in the province rose more than 20 per cent to $8.6 billion from $7.1 billion in 2010.

The provincial government is continuing to look to expand the industry, and has plans for expanding nine mines and opening eight additional mines by 2015. Coleman says, “The mineral exploration and mining industry brings in millions of dollars in revenue and provides well-paying, secure jobs in communities across the province,” adding, “This government is working to ensure these jobs continue and expand and mineral exploration continues to fuel investment.”

January 22 to 28 has been proclaimed Mineral Exploration week by the province.
