While waiting for the fire department, they battled the blaze themselves, using fire extinguishers, and when those ran out, using buckets of water and shovels of snow. Fire Chief Fred Burrows said they did a good job of keeping it small, and were lucky they caught it early.
The building sustained only minimal damage, and is still in usable condition; from the outside you can’t even tell there was a fire.
