The website, called the “Northern B.C. Man Challenge”, provides information on healthy and active living, in a format designed specifically for men.

The site features healthy food choices, information on living an active lifestyle, local events, activities and more.

Northern Health Men’s Health Coordinator Brandon Grant outlines the benefits of such a website.

“The website is constructed to provide health information in a unique format specifically designed for men in Northern B.C. For example, men will be able to submit health related questions to a medical health officer who will respond through blogs on the questions and topic areas raised.”

The new website is part of a larger men’s health strategy by Northern Health. A 2010 men’s health consultation led to a report on men’s health by Medical Health Officer Dr. David Bowering, former Chief Medical Officer for Northern Health. The report, released in Nov. 2010, provided recommendations for a strategy to address the issues related to poor health among men, and the launch of the website is one step in a process to inform and educate men about thief life choices.

Dr. David Bowering says, “we know that men in Northern B.C. are not accessing health services in a proactive manner. This is especially concerning since these men have shorter life expectancies and poorer health outcomes than women and men in other areas of B.C.”

Some key components of the new website include healthy recipes, monthly contests, facts and stats regarding men’s health, an “Ask Dr. B” question and answer blog and tips on getting active.

The program invites anyone interested in helping improve the health of Northern B.C. men to share their stories, provide pictures and learn more about their health.

For more information on the program, visit the new web site at www.men.northernhealth.ca.
