While the investigation is ongoing, the Fort St. John Fire Department says it is possible a heater purchased three weeks earlier may have been the cause of the blaze. Leavitt, his girlfriend and her three kids have been left with what they packed in their suitcases for two days, and not much more.

Already, the family says they are overwhelmed with donations. They’ve been given a one bedroom place to stay indefinitely, while the children stay at their father’s, and a couple of double and single beds. Leavitt has also heard that a truck of furniture is on its way from Calgary, although at this point he doesn’t have the room to store it. A cheque for $500 was even received from an unknown Calgary donor.

One son, Noah, size 12, has been given a large amount of clothes, but Annie, who lost almost everything in the fire, and Keegan, size 10, are still in need. Fortunately, the boys kept some clothes at another residence. Annie, age 12, wears a women’s medium to large shirt and size 5/6 pant. The children also only have the toys given to them at Christmas.

What may be the biggest loss in the fire, is Leavitt’s DJ equipment. He runs Count Floyd Productions, where he works as a DJ. Almost all of his equipment has been destroyed. He’s been lent equipment for his next job in Taylor on New Year’s Eve, but in the future he will need speakers, a karaoke machine, a board and a laptop in order to get back to work.

Somehow, the family remains in high spirits, and is simply thankful that no one is in the hospital. The search for a new, three bedroom home starts today. The family says they will donate back any of the donations they can’t use, to help others who may need it.

If you’re able to help this family out, monetary donations, along with donations of household items, are being accepted by Jason and Jodie at 778-256-0583 or 250-793-0150.
