Fort St. John gets portion of provincial grant

$16.9 million dollars will be shared between communities province-wide in grants-in-lieu of property taxes. Such grants are to be distributed in order to reimburse municipalities for beneficial services to government properties such as sewers, fire protection and roads.

The amount each community receives is based on the assessed value of the properties and the municipality’s tax rate.

Pat Pimm, Peace River MLA, says,"these dollars will help communities across B.C. and right here in Fort St. John deliver important services and provide funding for local projects and improvements."

Since 2002, the B.C. government has distributed over $173 million as grants-in-lieu to B.C. municipalities. Each municipality distributes portions of the funds to its regional district, with those governments using the money to help pay for local services.
