Bantam Flyers dominate in Grande Prairie tournament

The Knights of Columbus Bantam Flyers made their tournament debut Friday evening, taking on host team the Grande Prairie Knights. The Flyers nearly earned a tournament opening shut out, but allowed a goal with only 58 seconds remaining in the game.

Brysan Eklund earned the honour of game MVP and Lane Delfs got the win in between the pipes for Fort St. John.

The Flyers next hit the ice for a Saturday double-header. The Flyer’s second game of the tournament was very similar to their first, as they dominated the Calmar Cobras. Seth Hanna only allowed one goal in net for Fort St. John, Gavin Gould’s hat-trick earned him game MVP honours, and Eklund and Nolan Legace both contributed with five points each.

The Flyers barely had time to let their equipment dry, as they were right back on the ice Saturday afternoon. Despite a different team, Yellowknife, the boys produced the same dominant results. Saturday’s second game had James Bowie receive the title of MVP, as he put the puck in the net three times.

After waltzing their way through the first portion of the tournament, the Knights of Columbus Flyers found themselves face-to-face with the Beaverlodge Blades in the finals on Sunday. Emerson Loewen’s three assist performance earned him the championship game MVP, while Alex Hartman contributed four points in the win. The Flyers had seven different goal scorers in the championship winning game.

The Knights of Columbus Bantam Flyers will have to defend their title this weekend, as they host their home tournament from Dec. 2-4. The weekend long tournament will take place at the Pomeroy Sport Centre and the Bantam Flyers will first take to the ice on Friday afternoon at 12:45 p.m.
