After losing in Dawson Creek 5-4 Friday, the Huskies dominated in their home opener Saturday evening, out-shooting the Junior Canucks 33-16 for a final score of 8-2.
Despite an intense start to the game, momentum quickly shifted towards the Huskies as the first period progressed. Before the three minute marker of the first, the pups found themselves up 3-0, with Kole Norris scoring the Huskies first two goals 12 seconds apart.
The quick lead was one that Dawson Creek seemed unable to overcome.
Regardless of the fact it was an exhibition game, it was an important game none-the-less for the sake of the team’s roster. Saturday’s game was the final opportunity for those trying out for the team to make a good impression on their coaches.
One player who helped his own cause was number 18, John Wayne Howes. The big bodied winger had himself a four point night, which included a hat-trick. Howes only played a few games for the Huskies last season.
After the game, it was a frantic Huskies dressing room, as new head coach Gary Alexander and the rest of his coaching staff talked to their players one by one regarding whether or not they made the team.
The new 2011-2012 Huskies roster will hit the ice for their first regular season game this Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host the Grande Prairie JDA Kings.
The Huskies regular season home opener will take place at the North Peace Arena, puck drops at 8 p.m.
