Sport BC will host its Community Sports Hero Awards in Dawson Creek on Oct. 18 to recognize those who have dedicated themselves to grow and develop amateur sport at the community level.

“Volunteers are what fuel the development and sustainability of community sport within British Columbia,” said Tim Gayda, president and CEO of Sport BC, in a statement. “These awards are a rare and meaningful opportunity to acknowledge individuals who have made a significant and continued contribution to sport within their community.”

To be eligible for an award, an individual must have been a dedicated sport volunteer for a minimum of eight years through coaching, officiating, boards, administration, special events, et cetera. Nomination forms are available online at, and the nomination period closes on Sept. 30.

Sports heroes will be recognized with a statuette and a gift certificate to Firstar Sports, a sporting apparel company.

The public is welcome to attend the award ceremony on Oct. 18 ceremony to help celebrate the Community Sports Heroes. A venue for the ceremony has yet to be determined, but will be posted as soon as that information is confirmed.

The Community Sports Hero Awards were held in Dawson Creek once before in February, 2009. Dawson Creek will be the tenth stop for the awards this year. The awards are presented by EnCana.
