Failure at substation resulted in power outage

Bob Gammer, manager of community relations in the North for the public utility, said the misoperation of a relay at the Dawson Creek substation at about 11:20 a.m. resulted in the wide-spread outage.

"It separated from the grid, and five circuits with customers on them were without power for approximately 38 minutes," he said. "As a result, we had 8,228 customers without power for those 38 minutes."

He said the error was corrected and those circuits are now running as normal. He added anyone who is still experiencing a power outage should call BC Hydro at 1-888-POWERON (769-3766).

Gammer said work is underway to expand the substation, but the outage was unrelated, and they don't expect any interruptions to power as a result of that work.

He added currently BC Hydro relies on customers phoning in to report outages, but once new smart meters are installed, they will be able to identify and respond more quickly to outages. He said in the Peace region, the installation of those metres is scheduled for next spring.
