Representatives from Ferus Inc. were at the Dawson Creek and District Hospital this morning to present members of the Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $10,000 towards the foundation’s “ Extreme Maternity Makeover” campaign.
“The communities we operate in are important to our success,” said Dick Brown, president and CEO of Ferus. “We saw this as a positive opportunity to help out in an area that needs help.”
Construction started last year on a plant to produce 200 tonnes per day of liquid nitrogen, which is used for stimulating the production of natural gas wells. However, earlier this year Ferus announced it was doubling that capacity to 400 tonnes per day by building a second facility, for a total investment worth about $55 million. The first plant is expected to be operational by the beginning of October, while the second plant should come online early next year.
The donation this morning wasn’t the first made by the company in Dawson Creek, as last year Ferus announced a $75,000 contribution towards construction of the Calvin Kruk Centre for the Arts.
“We continue to look for opportunities to help out,” said Brown.
For the Hospital Foundation, the donation represents a significant step forward in its goal to raise approximately $600,000 to completely renovate the hospital’s maternity ward and outfit it with new equipment to care for the community’s mothers and newborns, said Jerimy Earl, the foundation’s communications and events coordinator.
“I think it’s great for a company to make inroads like this into the community, in addition to the donation they made to the Calvin Kruk Centre for the Arts,” said Earl. “This is huge for us and we certainly appreciate them doing it.”
He said while the money hasn’t yet been earmarked for the purchase of a specific piece of equipment, there has been some discussion amongst the foundation’s board about acquiring a Triple-Channel intravenous infusion pump, which can be used to replace body fluids and/or administer drugs.
