One person has died after a two vehicle collision just north of Fort St. John.

The collision occurred, Tuesday evening around 6 p.m., at Mile 62 of the Alaska Highway.

Fort St. John RCMP say a northbound Pontiac car driven by an 18 year-old male from Charlie Lake crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic. The car collided with a southbound semi tractor trailer.

The Pontiac driver was killed instantly. His next of kin have been notified but his name is not being released.

The driver of the semi tractor trailer was unhurt. However, the vehicle sustained considerable damage as it went off the road.

Police say they are still investigating the cause of the crash and will provide updates when they become available.

The highway has been closed, but is expected to reopen to single lane alternating traffic at 6 a.m., Wednesday.
