The Fort Hotel is finally set to undergo remediation – and under budget – after Fort St. John City Council awarded the Asbestos Abatement Project tender to NAPP Enterprises Ltd.

The City had originally budgeted $250,000 out of its 2010 budget for the project, which was then rolled over into the 2011 budget.

However, the winning company entered a bid of only $131,160, more than $100,000 under the City’s project budget.

Although Director of Facilities and Protective Services Jim Rogers says the exact start date for the remediation work has not been determined, the project is slated to be completed this fall.

The City took over the property last fall after its previous owner failed to pay three years worth of taxes.
The property is contaminated with asbestos, which was commonly used in building construction up until the early 1980s.
