With winter behind us and the grass turning green, the baseball season is rapidly approaching.

On Thursday, May 19, the Fort St. John Black Sox will be playing their first game of the 2011 season in the Wheatbelt Baseball League.

The Sox will be kicking off their fifth season against the Cecil Lake Norwest Thunder, which will be taking place at the college diamonds, located after Fish Creek. The game will be played at the farthest diamond from the college and will begin at 7 p.m.

This year’s list of teams includes the Fort St. John Black Sox, the Cecil Lake Norwest Thunder, the Rycroft Rage, the Peace River Stampeders and the Grimshaw Huskies.

As of right now both Grande Prairie and Dawson Creek were unable to field teams for the season.

Unlike the previous season where attendance was a bit of an issue, this year the Black Sox have a full roster of committed players, hoping to bring the team back to its 2008 championship winning caliber.
