Junior secondary students successful in weekend meet

Over the weekend, Fort St. John junior secondary students traveled to Alberta to compete in a series of athletic events.

On Saturday, students from Dr. Kearney Junior Secondary, as well as students from various schools from all across the peace region, were in Grande Prairie, competing in the 2011 Peace Country Classic & Hershey Meet.

There were 18 students who participated from Dr. Kearney Junior Secondary, with 21 medals won.

Students from the school’s Track Club did exceptionally well in the 4 x 100 relays. The Girls 13-14 age group placed first with a time of 60.40 The Boys 15-16 age group also placed first in the same category with a time of 51.50.

Students also competed individually, with a number of competitors earning top honours. Tate Kucera placed first in the Boys 15-16 High Jump with a height of 1.63 meters. Kelsey Maclean finished first in the Girls 13-14 100 Meter Dash with a time of 14.40. Jade Mah placed first in the Girls 13-14 800 Meter Run at 3:02.80.

Some other students who placed first in their meets include Kameron Furlong, who won the Boys 13-14 800 Meter Run at 2:29.00. Shalena Breitkreutz was the victor of the Girls 13-14 200 Meter Dash with a time of 30.20. Alex Adkins also placed first in the Boys 11-12 Long Jump with a distance of 1.53 Meters.
