It’s a day that focuses solely on women. On Tuesday, International Women’s Day is celebrating its centenary – 100-year anniversary – and in Fort St. John there will be several activities for both women and men to attend.
International women’s day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in 1911 and is now celebrated around the world with thousands of events. In certain countries, including Afghanistan, Uganda, Zambia, Russia, China and Cuba, it is an official holiday. In China, Madagascar and Nepal, the holiday is solely for women.
International women’s day has evolved over the past hundred years, changing from a focus on the negative aspects affecting women to a celebration of the positives, Lori Ackerman, one of the organizers of the events in Fort St. John, told Issues and Answers last week.

Ackerman says some major changes reflecting society’s attitudes towards women include giving women the right to vote and having women involved in professions where 100 years ago it would have been unheard of.
However, Ackerman does admit that there are inequities and problems that still exist.

International Women’s Day events in Fort St. John will begin at 7 a.m. with a breakfast at the North Peace Cultural Centre.
There will also be free recreational events at both the North Peace Leisure Pool and the Pomeroy Sport Centre:
Water Walking (NPLP) – 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Deep Water Aquafit (NPLP) – 7:10 – 8 p.m.
Women’s Walk (Pomeroy Sport Centre – Walking Track) – 7 – 9 p.m.
Women’s Skate (Pomeroy Sport Centre – Skating Oval) – 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m.
There will also be a poetry reading at Whole Wheat and Honey from 7 until 9 p.m.
All events, except for the breakfast, are free. Tickets for the breakfast are $5 and can be purchased from the North Peace Community Resources Society, Patch Java or the BCGEU office.
