The Alaska Highway Committee is requesting a budget from two different regional governments to help have the Alaska Highway designated as a national historic site.
The AHC has asked both the Peace River Regional District and the Northern Rockies Regional District to each fund 50 per cent of its requested $1,218,819 budget.
The million-dollar support would be used beginning in April and until March 2015.

On Thursday, the AHC presented their request to the PRRD and will be travelling to Fort Nelson on Monday to present it to the Northern Rockies District.
Powel says the project is important for both regions.

According to the Committee’s report submitted to the Regional District, designating the Alaska Highway as a national historic site would not only stimulate infrastructure development, but aid conservation projects and aid economic development in the area.
The proposal also states the designation would help generate an increase in tourism by attracting global attention, generating higher traffic rates and exposure to the area, as well as generate economic benefits for the region.
