A local Fort St. John girl with a generous spirit made a special decision for her ninth birthday.

Instead of asking for presents for herself, Brooke Powell who turned nine years-old on Jan. 7, encouraged birthday guests to bring items suited for cats to her swimming party at the Super 8 Motel.

The items are being donated to a cat foster home that receives assistance from the Dawson Creek SPCA.

Brooke says she decided not to ask for any gifts for herself because she already had enough stuff and believed she did not need anything else.

She also says she’s very fond of animals and simply likes to help out other people, which previously included donating toys, games and gift certificates to Big Brothers Big Sisters two years ago.

The presents Brooke intends to donate include cat toys, food, treats, kitty litter and even a scratching post.
