Farmers in the Peace River region are receiving support from the Province.
Many local farmers have been suffering for the past three years due to local drought conditions.
To aid these farmers, the Province is waiving farm income and production requirements for the 2011 property assessment, says Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Stephanie Cadieux.
Cadieux says the waiver is to ensure farmers are not severely burdened with high tax levels associated with residential properties. The burden could exist for some farmers if they haven’t been able to produce a specific amount of agricultural revenue, which could mean a property might have its farm status revoked.
The Province has invoked section 6.1 the standards for classification of land as a farm regulation means that cabinet can temporarily suspend income requirements for farms.
Agriculture Minister Ben Stewart says invoking the section shows that the Province is paying attention to the problems facing Peace River farmers.
