The Fort St John Huskies kept their composure. They didn’t have anyone freak out. And in the end that may have been the difference. In an important game against a team ahead of them in the standings the Pups played disciplined hockey and took advantage when the Wheelers lost their cool. The Huskies ended up scoring 3 PP goals, 2 from Hildebrand, and killed of all 6 Grande Prairie Power Plays en route to a 5-2 victory. All the scoring came in an eventful second period. GP started things off when Chad Sutherland scored his second of the year. The D man popping up in the slot to fire a loose puck past Travis McLean. The Huskies tied it up when Payden Wongstedt blasted a point shot past Tyler Vant Erve. Brighton Campbell scored next for the Huskies to once again tie the game. The Wheelers then lost their heads taking mutiple penalties, 6 in the period in total, and having their top player Cory Littman tossed for lipping off the referee. Goalie Tyler Vant Erve experienced a rush of blood and was tossed after he reinged punches on the back of Aaron Dendys head. And Rory Simigan, along with Connor Rose, was kicked out for fighting. Cody Hildebrand took advantage with 2 goals before a beauty from Kole Norris capped the scoring. Talk about a huge win for the Huskies who now trail the Wheelers by two points in the standings and have a game in hand.
There were a couple inuries that I want to update. Brighton Campbell fell awkwardly and has a sore back. Aaron Dendys took a shot off the leg and was limping after the game. And a couple other Pups have some bumps and bruises after as well. That’s what happens sometimes in hockey though and when the Huskies needed a win they kept their compsure and used excellent special teams play to beat a very good Grande Priaire team.
Player of Game – Kole Norris
Hard Worker – Cody Hildebrand
Hard Hit – Payden Wongstedt
Don’t forget the Pups are home next weekend for a pair as they take on Beaverlodge on Friday night and Peace River on Saturday. Both those games at the NPA get started at 8pm.
Also please don’t forget that next Sunday, December 5th, the Huskies will be out in Fort St John collecting food for the Food Bank with the annual Fill the Bus campaign. Please give as much as you can and if you want to help they always need volunteers so contact the Huskies office.
