Fort St. John City Council made two proclamations at their meeting on Monday.
The first was to proclaim that the week of Nov. 14-21 be declared Restorative Justice Week in the City. Restorative Justice Week will also be held in other parts of Canada, and the world, with the purpose of sharing the learning and results that have come through the experience of practitioners in the application of restorative justice initiatives.
The theme for this year is ‘Past Present and Future’ which acknowledges the beginning of a new decade and a good time to reflect on the achievements of the past. In 2009 there were 164 towns and cities across Canada which proclaimed Restorative Justice Week. This represented 30% of the national population.
The second proclamation made by council was the announcement that the week of Nov. 14-20 will also be proclaimed as Addictions Awareness Week. Fort St. John has made this proclamation in the past and it is to help bring awareness to the serious issue of addictions in the region.
The proclamation was put forward by Northern Health and wishes to acknowledge that addiction awareness is something that needs to be done every day and not just during a designated week.
