The Council of the Western Treaty 8 Chiefs have extended their support for the federal government’s decision to deny approval of the proposed Taseko mine near Williams Lake, B.C.
The decision was announced on Nov. 2 and concludes that the proposed mine would have adverse effects on fish, their habitat and navigation. The panel who made the decision also cited the adverse effects the project would have on the current use of lands and resources for traditional purposes by First Nations.
The project had been approved by the provincial government, but the feds stepped in and summarily rejected the proposal. However, the federal government did not close the door on accepting a revised proposal for the mine. There are 65 jobs that will be lost as a result.
Chief Norman Davis of the Doig Rivers First Nation welcomes the federal government’s announcement and says that it is welcome news to those who are also opposed to the Site C Dam.
