The Immediate Roadside Prohibition legislation recently introduced in B.C. is improving the ability of police to apprehend impaired drivers in Fort. St. John, according to police.
Since the new legislation, the Fort St. John RCMP, Peace Region and City Traffic Services removed 62 drivers from the road during October 2010, as opposed to 39 drivers in October of last year.
The RCMP say the new legislation allows officers to spend less time overall processing impaired drivers. This can be accomplished in 25 to 30 minutes from start to finish, which enables officers to be back out on the road faster to continue enforcing impaired driving laws.
The objective of impaired driving enforcement is to reduce the amount of fatal and serious injury collisions involving impaired drivers, and to increase overall road safety. In the Fort St. John area, approximately 40 percent of all fatal and serious injury collisions are as a result of alcohol.
Police will continue to increase impaired driving enforcement in the area, to prepare for the upcoming holiday season. Traditionally the holiday season sees an increase in the number of impaired drivers.
