On Jay Hill’s last day as the Member of Parliament for the Prince George – Peace River riding, the federal New Democrats are urging the Prime Minister to call a by-election.

They say Stephen Harper is legally able to call a by-election by Nov. 5, which would see the election happen on Dec. 13. They add that it’s imperative the riding have a voice in the House of Commons.

One of the concerns the NDP is trying to address for all British Columbians is the fact that the newly introduced HST is being applied to home heating.

They say Harper should help decrease the expense by removing the federal portion of the tax from home heating.

Whether an election occurs sooner or later, six people from across the riding have already announced their candidacy, including two from Prince George, one from Tumbler Ridge and three from Fort St. John.

However, despite the announcements, the Conservative Riding Association has not officially set a date as to when it will pick a new candidate.
