A young boy has suffered a broken leg after being hit by a van and being thrown through the air.

The incident occurred on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Police say the 10 year-old boy was crossing the street at a marked crosswalk when he was hit by the driver of a brown van. The boy was thrown what police describe as “quite a distance” and was transported to the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia.

Police say the driver was given a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian, but that he was rattled and apologetic after the accident.

They say all pedestrians should only cross at marked crosswalks or intersections when traffic is completely stopped. They are also reminding pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers and that drivers should be aware of all pedestrians when approaching a crosswalk or intersection.
