Local residents are being encouraged to help stop violence against women through an annual event.
The ‘Take Back the Night’ campaign is being hosted by the Women’s Resource Society in Fort St. John.
The international campaign helps promote women’s safety in the community, including in the home and in public places. It also helps promote women’s right to say no to violence, says Emily Goodman, executive director of the Women’s Resource Centre.

The campaign has been in place for more than 30 years. According to the official Take Back the Night website, the first ever event took place in Philadelphia in Oct. of 1975.
This year’s local event begins Tuesday evening at around 8 p.m., following the Society’s Annual General Meeting.
Goodman says it will begin at the North Peace Cultural Centre with a candlelit march around the city’s downtown area. She encourages everyone who wants to speak out against violence against women to participate.
