Summit to bring local artists together

The arts community will be congregating in Fort St. John for the first ever Northeast Arts Summit.

The summit is being put on by 2010 Legacies Now. The provincially funded group was established to help provide social and economic benefits for artists across the province before and after the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

It is designed to bring different types of artists together to discuss current issues affecting the arts community and will include discussions on artist collaborations and professional development, says Lori Baxter, director of arts for the organization.

The theme for the symposium is ‘Shifting Ground: New Realities, New Ideas, New Opportunities’.

Baxter says because the arts community is often underfunded, the summit gives local arts communities the opportunity to connect with each other and the ability to discuss areas of potential funding, including through individual fundraising techniques.

Several of these workshops have been held across the province. The summits in Fort St. John and Prince George are the only two being held for communities in the Northeastern region.

The two-day summit begins Friday at 9 a.m. at the North Peace Cultural Centre.
