G.M. Shrum plant turbine replacement project

BC Hydro has awarded Montreal’s Voith Hydro the contract for a complete overhaul of five Francis trubines for the G.M. Shrum hydropower plant near Hudson’s Hope.
Voith claims it is the largest turbine replacement project, BC Hydro has given to date, but it has not disclosed the contract value.

The first replacement unit will be ready in 2012, and each of the others is slated to be functional, on an annual basis, with all five up and running in early 2017.

The revision will generate an annual supplement, of 177 gigawatt hours of electricity, by using the same volume of water…and that’s enough electricity, to power 15 thousand homes.
