The city of Fort St. John might soon be getting a new condominium style apartment building in the downtown area.

The proposed building would be located on 100 St. beside the RCMP detachment and would be six storeys with 38 units. The building would have a fitness centre and activity area, along with both underground and above ground parking.

City council passed a motion, Monday, to create the development permits to allow for a shorter distance between the development and other properties. The area would reduce the space on the south side from 10.5 to 6 metres and the east side from 10.5 to 4.5 metres.

The extra space would be used to allow for both the underground and above ground parking lots.

There will be a public meeting on Aug. 23 for residents to learn more and have any concerns addressed.

Construction on the building is expected to begin near the end of September.
