There’s confirmation from the Prince George Fire Centre…which includes the Peace Region…that this year fire crews had their second busiest April in the past eight years.
Since 2003 the fire centre has responded to an average of 30 wildfires, prior to May first, covering about 300 hectares.
However, the numbers for the same period this year are 57 fires, with a burn area of nearly 600 hectares.
In addition, the centre has confirmed that all but one of the fires was caused by human activity.
There are fears this could be a very bad fire year in BC, given low snowpacks and the lack of moisture.
In fact, open burning has already been banned in the Cariboo region, but for the moment is still allowed in the Prince George Fire Centre.
