B.C.’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum gave Fort St. John City Councilors an update on Monday.

Blair Lekstrom explained he wanted to keep councilors informed on what’s happening in his ministry.

He started with the oil and gas industry, and focused on the newly-introduced Bill 8. Lekstrom encourages council to review the bill, which includes amendments to the Oil and Gas Activities Act, as well as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act.

Lekstrom explained that his ministry is currently working with the Peace River Regional District to establish a farmer’s advocate office out of Dawson Creek.

The Energy Minister also outlined the Province’s decision to move into the third phase of Site-C…

But, the project still needs to undergo an Environmental Assessment and further consultations before it proceeds to construction.

On the mining end of things, Lekstrom explained that the coal industry is starting to boom in the Northeast.

Meanwhile, Lekstrom reiterated the importance of natural gas in B.C.’s future. He said natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel the Province has.

Lekstrom says he doesn’t foresee a future where British Columbians do not use fossil fuels, but he says advancements in technology will help develop cleaner energy in the Province.
