Local firefighters don tuxes for burn victims

Local firefighters are battling burns by slapping on their best dancing shoes.

The Fort St. John Fire Department is spearheading its second annual Firefighters Charity Ball, with all proceeds to go to the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.

Local Captain Brent Morgan sees firsthand how the money transforms the lives of burn victims both young and old.

He explains that one of the Burn Fund’s most influential programs is the annual ‘burn camp’ for kids, that is held in Paradise Valley, just north of Squamish.

Morgan says that kind of self-confidence is a vital step in the recovery process. While there is no fee for the campers, it costs organizers around $2,500 for each child to attend.

The organization is also developing a “Burn Fund Building” in Vancouver that will offer support and services to burn and trauma survivors, their families, and the public.

Cpt. Morgan says the Burn Fund also provides financial support to victims for things like travel expenses. He gives the example of a burn victim from Fort St. John, who needed help traveling back home.

Morgan says he hopes this year’s Charity Ball will generate enough money to help sustain those crucial programs.

The formal Firefighters Charity Ball will be held at the Pomeroy Hotel on Saturday, April 10th. Cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m., with a dinner and dance to follow.

The night will feature live music by Dayna Manning and Adam Winn. There will also be silent and live auctions and door prizes. Morgan says one of auction items includes luggage and a gift certificate for WestJet flights.

Tickets are $75 each and are available at the Visitors Information Centre and Marc Joseph and Trends Clothing until Tuesday, April 13th. After that, tickets will only be available at the Fort St. John Fire Department, by cash or cheque.
