The Huskies made it a three-win weekend, with a 6-3 victory over Slave Lake on Sunday afternoon.
Cody Hildebrand scored a breakaway in the second period, and banged in the eventual game-winner from the side of the net early in the third. Kole Norris also scored a pair, while Logan Daneluk and Robbie Sidhu added singles.
For Daneluk, it was his second goal in two games for the Huskies, after first being called-up for Saturday night’s game. “It was awesome” he said after Sunday’s game. “Good group of guys, a fast paced game, what more can you ask for?” Daneluk says he’s been told by the Huskies he may be needed again in the playoffs, and he says he’s “more than happy” to oblige. Daneluk has been playing for the NEBC and Yukon Tracker-Flyers, while Dayne Pederson, another call-up, comes from the tier 2 midgets
“It was good weekend” Huskies Assistant Coach Jeremy Clothier said of his team’s three wins. “We made a statement against Grande Prairie, and we played alright [on Saturday].” He said his team’s effort level dropped off on Sunday, knowing that they were playing a softer opponent. But, he says it’s a product of their age, and he’s confident they will come to play, come playoff time.
The Huskies earned six points over the course of the weekend, all but clinching second place overall in the NWJHL standings. That means the pups will get home ice advantage through at least the first two rounds, and avoid the unbeaten Wolverines until the finals.
Next Friday (Feb. 5th) the Huskies host Peace River. Then, they head back to Slave Lake, for games Saturday night and Sunday afternoon against the Wolves.
