The 2010 Allan Cup Host Committee got some good news on Monday night.
The City of Fort St. John has just signed off on a $75,876 in-kind donation for the prestigious Allan Cup competition.
City Councilors unanimously voted in favor of the contribution at Monday night’s council meeting.
However, when it came to a second request of a $10,000 sponsorship, Fort St. John Mayor Bruce Lantz spoke up.

The in-kind donation consists of $62,000 in operational costs for the North Peace Arena; $2,200 for facility improvements; $11,176.50 for additional maintenance and ice fee waivers; and $500 for advance ticket sales at the Visitor Information Centre.
Chairman of the Allan Cup Host Committee, Paul van Nostrand, says he doesn’t blame Lantz for opposing the committee’s second request.

Even though the $10,000 sponsorship was nixed by City Council, van Nostrand says the Committee is extremely happy with the in-kind donation.
He says the competition should rake in $128 thousand, all of which will go to the Fort St. John Senior Flyers. This will make up a large chunk of the Flyers’ annual budget of around $150,000.
The Allan Cup competition will be held on April 19th – 24th at the North Peace Arena. The event will be showcased on national television, and will bring in more than 200 players to the City.
