The Huskies broke their record in this year’s ‘Fill the Bus’ campaign, bringing in just shy of 20,000 pounds of food.
The Huskies and their legion of helpers, used the North Peace Arena as their base on Sunday. Smaller teams then used private vehicles to scour the entire city. They knocked on doors across the community, collecting food, baby stuff, and various supplies for those in need in Fort St. John.
“It’s so important” said Salvation Army Captain Ben Lippers of the annual Fill the Bus campaign. “It usually sustains us through the winter months, for the non-perishable food items.” But, Lippers also admitted this year’s campaign is a little extra-pressing, because of the economic downturn. “We’ve had an increase in every venue” says Lippers, referring to the food bank, family services, and emergency shelter operations at the Salvation Army. “We’ve seen higher numbers, and we know we’re going to be going through more, so it’s very important.”
The Salvation Army now has some work ahead, getting all the donations ready for storage and distribution to the community. But Captain Lippers doesn’t seem daunted by the task. “It’s good work, I love that kind of work” he laughed. “We’ll figure out where to stack it, and rack it, and then we’ll worry about it afterwards. The final tally from Sunday’s drive sits unofficially at 19,990 pounds.
The Huskies were in high spirits, despite a cold day out and a loss the night before to Peace River. But, once again, they also got a mass of helpers, ranging from Husky Moms and supporters, to random volunteers from the community.
As well, members of the FSJ Petroleum Association Midget ‘AA’ Flyers, the Knights of Columbus Bantam ‘AA’ Flyers, and the North Peace Eagles ladies hockey team all pitched in. Midget Flyers goaltender Travis McLean says his team has been involved in Fill the Bus for the last couple of years, and the players are happy to contribute their time to such an important cause. “It’s a little cold, but everybody’s been enjoying themselves” he said, adding “doing it as a team it’s not too bad – it gets done pretty fast.”
