BC Hydro is moving ahead with the next steps in its plan to acquire clean and renewable electricity.
BC Hydro announced last year a plan to help BC Hydro achieve its goal of electricity self-sufficiency by 2016. In total 68 proposals were submitted to BC Hydro, with Hydro eliminating 21 proposals because proponents withdrew or the proposal did not meet the requirements.
There are currently eight projects proposed for the BC Peace Region. The eight proposed projects are all in the Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd and Hudson’s Hope area. Finavera Renewables Inc, still has 4 proposals before BC Hydro and all four are for wind farms near Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd. EPCOR Power Development Limited Partnership and Thunder Mountain Wind Limited Partnership each have a proposal for a wind farm near Tumbler Ridge. There is also another wind farm proposed by Hackney Hills Wind Limited Partnership near Hudson’s Hope and the Upper Halfway.
BC Hydro will then narrow down the list even further to a top 13. Those projects will then begin discussions aimed at securing electricity purchase agreements. The remaining projects will still have the opportunity to work with Hydro, but will have to make their proposals more cost-effective.
BC Hydro intends to begin awarding contracts for the Clean Power Call in December.
